EVH Frankenstein Has Landed

It’s arguably the most luscious of all guitars associated with Fender’s Tribute Series and is actually the most expensive new guitar that we’ve ever had in the office: the Eddie Van Halen Frankenstein Replica.

As far as we know it’s the only example outside of North America that hasn’t been sold, and we’re grateful to Gary at Sounds Great in Manchester for the loan…

Based to an almost autistic level on Ed’s original bitsa, the Frankenstein is as close as most of use will ever get to actually playing the very guitar with which rock music was changed for ever.

Every stripe, every ding and every feature is exactly the same as those on Ed’s own guitar, down to the 1971 quarter coin that’s screwed just behind the bridge and the cigarette burns the headstock. The bridge humbucker is an ultra-secret EVH model designed by the mighty Seymour Duncan, while the neck single-coil…well, it’s not wired in, nor has it ever been!

We’ll be featuring the guitar heavily in an issue or two’s time and, after having spent a few days in it’s lauded company, we’ve found that it’s less of a guitar and more of a work of sheer art.

Oh, and the whimpering sound you can hear is coming from a certain member of the Guitarist team who, like most of us if we’re honest, is certain he’ll be unable to afford the frankly barking £15,999 proposed UK price tag…

£15,999??!? You could buy a few PRS Private Stock guitars for that price!

Ooh, I can't wait to have a go when they bring out the lefty model.

Stop laughing at me.

Eddie is and the most important guitarist since Hendrix with "tapping" being only, I believe, his smallest contribution (what about palm muting, guitar design, unheard of before style of rythm, amp design, whammy technology, mixing pop & rock in unprecedented ways, etc...etc...we could go on and on!) but what Fender are doing is both ridiculous and shameful, and stupid, and pointless... I'd save £ 16.000 on a lifetime supply of (blueberry) muffins, rather than playing this stupid game. Well, I guess someone has to take care of this world's geeks after all....!

I just played one for a good hour and i have to say it is a great sounding guitar......the pickup is really something special......no worth the money for a player but a collector YES.. I do have one of the remaining 30 left out of the 300.. for sale going on Ebay tomorrow...and it will be able to ship to the Uk at alot less than 16k pounds....

Speechless! What an amazing thing of beauty.
Can't help wondering if anyone will actually buy one to play (as opposed to just look at / hang on their wall). Having said that, i guess we're all free to do whatever we want with our cash....
EVH's legacy as a guitar design innovator is everywhere already so what's / who's this actually for?
Collectors?
Fender's ego?
Edward's ego?

£16k..hmmmmm...
...how much can you get for a kidney these days?

the world is a crazy place! :o)

I thought the Clapton Blackie guitar was a little over the top but Fender have since topped this by launching the Clapton "Crossroads" guitar for similar money and with no distinguisable features over a standard Clapton custom shop model other than it carries a "Crossroads" logo and is a limited edition... or have I missed something?

The Van Halen guitar is great to look at, but it's always been a mystery as to why a real 'guitar player' would buy one of these unless of course each model is played by Eddie before it goes into the case... :o)

I'm sure it's a great guitar -- but it isn't going to make you sound or play like him. Eddie could play any guitar and it would still sound like him. It's a cliche about being all in the fingers...but in his case, it's true. It makes me smile that his Frankenstein cost a few hundred dollars to make and the cost of a copy is thousands. Good luck to whoever buys them.

ok, i'll never ever spend that sort of money on a guitar(even if i had it)...ever! i would however pay a lot of money to see a probably below par van halen with diamond dave if they'd only bloody play here! i was only 11 in 1984. eddie went into rehab cos he doesn't want to let the fans down, which fans? the american fans! sod the rest of us poor mortals. and further more...

I work at Guitar Center (I know, the evil empire) here in MA in the USA I'm form Blighty originally but moved a few years ago. I have to say playing and examining these guitars was a real thrill. It took my right back to the posters on the wall of Ed in my bedroom and I felt quite nostalgic. But look into the time, effort and expertise that went into recreating this guitar and you'll feel better about the price tag ($25000 in the USA) but not completely happy. I'd love one but my priorities are a little more in check with reality!! ( yes I'm just bitter I don;t have the $25000)

I can afford one but wouldn't.

I don't understand this game at all. To have a replica down to the last dent? Does that inspire a new series when the next "ding" appears?

Clearly Van Halen himself is on a bit of a royalty here. If you want to copy his sound don't Peavey help you do it? Why would you want to play a guitar that looks like someone elses? If you gig it sets you up for ridicule when you can't play like the master.

I can understand buying a guitar once owned by a "master" that featured on definite recordings eg Hendrix guitar that played the "Little Wing" solo. However to buy something like this is barking mad at the price. The notion that $25000 in the USA makes it some kind of bargain there is laughable.

This guitar will be bought by someone who hopes to make money out of it by selling it to someone else who wants to make money out of it. If such reptiles exist then buld an Island for them and let them get on with their dark work without contaminating the rest of us.

Clearly one for the most avid EVH fan and well off collectors alike. For £16k I could buy every guitar I could ever want and then some. Plus some amps and fx, etc.

BTW - I went to see Prince at the O2 recently (twice). Interesting to note that he still sports his 80's Hohner Telecaster copy. That must have cost no more than a few hundred dollars brand new. Now Hohner could release it and really cash in!

come on,who in there right mind would pay tht for any guitar, u could probably make ur own....though if i had the money i'd prbably get it..

The world went mad long ago...

Paying $25,000US for one of these so-called "Tribute" guitars is the crazyiest thing I've ever heard of. So now a few rich, non-playing, fans can take someone into their theft-proof "Music Rooms" and say: "Yes, and it's exactly like the real thing... How do you like the port?"

Semour Duncan can probably make even more cash by selling the EV pickups to teenagers, who'll go out to the garage and build their own versions for another $50 in junk parts. The kids have the spirit. Fender simply has $$$ signs in their eyes.
